Knowing how to play poker is not the same as knowing how to play poker. Have we gone crazy? Not at all, we explain. It is not the same to go through a few tables and have a good time playing than to develop advanced poker strategies to excel. Some of these somewhat more elaborate strategies to win in Texas holdem poker are well known and you should start practicing them if your intention is not to be a simple ‘fisher’ and start fighting in tournaments. Advanced Poker Strategies: The Continuation Bet
In poker you won’t win only if you only bet when you have good hands. It is impossible, because in the long term you will not have enough. But this doesn’t mean you have to bluff all the time either. In this limbo we find the continuation bet, one of the advanced poker strategies with which we will continue to attack once the flop has come out, even if we have not hit. A practical example: We have AK and we raise preflop, the big blind calls us and we are left alone. Low cards come out between the first three cards. What are we doing here? A bad player would check, we will continue betting.
It’s not bluffing, as we probably still have the strongest high card hand. Another function of this online poker strategy is to prevent the rival from pursuing his projects. That is to say, if he has four hearts and we make the pot more expensive, we are going to prevent him from destroying us with a flush. But this indicates the cases in which we should not make the continuation bet:
When we believe that an opponent may have tied a superior hand (three of a kind, full house, flush or straight, for example)
If there are many players in the hand. We remember that we do not necessarily have a winning hand. Against one player we are probably ahead, but against 4 there are fewer options.
If someone has bet before and we lose the initiative. This also works if we haven’t been aggressive enough before the flop.
Lock bets
This type of bet differs from the continuation bet in that we probably won’t go ahead. In both we don’t have an absolute winning hand and we don’t have position, but they are slightly different. As? Well, in the blocking bet we are probably behind, but we bet first to prevent a superior bet from the opponent.
For example, if we have hands like 9-10 and on the flop we see 8-J-A with a total of 4 hearts, after holding a slight raise from the big blind. One option would be to check for the fifth card (both straight and flush), but much smarter is to make a small raise. Probably the opponent has the A, which will prevent him from making a big bet, since the light bet preflop reveals that the A is not very well accompanied or that he has a pair of face cards without A. This online poker strategy has a very clear risk: that the rival with the A looks like a winner and responds with a check-raise (which we will see later).
